Carol

I walked into the office this morning like I owned the place. After what’s happened and the current high I’m in, it feels like I can do no wrong. I have my head held high and my shoulders straight. I’ve never exuded bitch boss energy more than in this moment.

I’m sitting behind my desk like the empress that I am. All my work is in order. My office seems ten times bigger. I cannot be contained.

I take a deep breath and smile wide. This is my kingdom and I rule each and every inch of it. Even the stock market’s agreeing with me since everything is in the green, baby. A good day to sell, sell, sell.

Donald ambles into my office with a goofy grin on his face. He has two Starbucks cups in his hands. With a bounce in his step, he moves to my desk and hands me the other cup.

I reach for it with confusion on my face and say, “Thank you?”

“I went on a coffee run and thought to get you one too,” he says with a creepy ass wink that I’ve never seen on him before. “A double shot macchiato with skimmed milk and a splash of caramel, right?”

Tentatively, I take a sip. The second the sweet bitterness of the coffee touches my tongue, my eyes pretty much roll to the back of my head. A moan escapes me.

“This is the best God damn coffee,” I say, mostly because it’s free and fetched for me by my boss.

“I’m glad that you like it.” He gives me a finger gun before he turns around and walks a couple of steps away. Then he turns towards me again and says, “Good work, Sykes. You handled yourself very well.”

A part of me gets choked up. It’s like having your father tell you that he’s proud of you. I push those feelings down, not watching to give Donald the satisfaction of seeing me melt at his adulation. This is my day, damn it. I’m going to revel in it if I want to.

“Thank you, Don,” I say, taking another sip from my coffee.

“Get back to work then.” He smiles before walking out of my office.

I lift my cup his way in salute and mumble to myself, “That’s the plan. That’s always been the plan.” I don’t call him an asshole. Today is not the day for such things.

My desk phone rings and I pick it up immediately.

“Sykes,” says a gruff male voice, “Anderson here.”

I lean back into my chair. “Mr. Anderson, what can I do for you?”

He’s one of my big whale clients who, not so long ago, threatened to jump ship. Oh, how his tone has changed now as he gives me more of his money to invest. It’s a nice chunk of change too.

By the time I end the call, the smile on my face is so big, my cheeks start to hurt.

My phone rings several more times in the span of an hour. It seems that
